Three terms, one practice

SEO, AEO and GEO can sound like three separate projects. For an independent clinic, a more useful starting point is the information people need about the practice. It should be accurate, understandable and accessible whether someone arrives from a traditional result, a map listing or an AI-assisted answer.

SEO means search-engine optimisation. AEO means answer-engine optimisation. GEO means generative-engine optimisation. The latter two describe ways of thinking about answer-led and AI-assisted discovery; they are not universal certifications or switches a website can turn on. Ask what work is actually being proposed before treating a new label as a new requirement for the clinic.

SEO looks after the foundations

The technical and editorial foundations of a website deserve attention before a new acronym does. Pages need a clear purpose, useful information and sensible connections to other relevant pages. The practice’s basic details should agree across the places a visitor encounters them, and the contact path should work on the screen they are using.

For a clinic, this is practical work. A service page should explain the service the practice actually offers. A location page should represent the real location. A title should help someone understand the page they are opening. These decisions improve the clarity of the website even before any change in search performance can be observed.

AEO asks whether the answer is clear

Answer-engine optimisation is a useful prompt to examine how a page handles questions. Does it answer the question directly? Is the explanation understandable without reading several unrelated sections? Does it provide enough context to avoid misleading someone? Clear headings and focused paragraphs can help a reader find the information they came for.

This is not a reason to turn every page into a long list of repetitive questions. Some subjects are better explained through a sequence, a short comparison or a practical example. Choose the structure that helps the reader. When a topic involves clinical judgment, the content still needs the appropriate review; an answer-shaped paragraph is not automatically a responsible answer.

GEO is not a guarantee of being mentioned

Generative-engine optimisation concerns how information may be discovered and used in AI-assisted experiences. For Google’s AI search features, the company says existing SEO practices remain relevant, with no additional technical requirements or special schema needed. That makes sound website work a more defensible starting point than a promise of a secret AI-only file.

Other systems have their own guidance and behaviour, so their requirements should be checked directly rather than assumed to match Google’s. Even when a page is accessible and eligible, inclusion is not assured. No service provider can honestly control every answer an independent system chooses to generate or promise that a clinic will be recommended for a particular question.

Measure what can actually be observed

Before agreeing to search work, ask what will be changed and how progress will be described. A completed website improvement is an observable action. A position recorded for a particular search is an observation with context. A future appointment attributed to an AI answer may be much harder to establish reliably. Keep those categories separate in the conversation.

A useful proposal should therefore name the work in ordinary language: correcting inconsistent details, improving a page, clarifying a question or examining available evidence. If the explanation stops at an acronym, ask for the concrete action behind it. The clinic should understand what it is buying before judging its value.

At InstantlyPages, we position SEO, AEO and GEO as connected perspectives on a trustworthy presence. Our existing foundations include organic and map measurement, while the wider managed offering is being prepared for early access. We are not presenting AI citation tracking as a live capability. The aim is to make useful changes, explain the evidence and remain clear about uncertainty, so a clinic can assess the work without depending on promises that sound more precise than the information allows.
